Rare Queen Anne-style home in NYC asks $10.49M

The townhouse at 51 W. 73rd St. — one of the city’s few remaining Queen Anne-style homes — has hit the market for $10.49 million, The Post has learned.

Built in 1885 by Henry J. Hardenbergh — the legendary architect behind The Dakota, the Plaza and the Waldorf Astoria, all of which are major Manhattan landmarks — this five-story residence is packed with character, charm and high-end touches.

That said, it’s a pedigree similar to the architect’s other buildings.

The Dakota, built between 1880 and 1884 in the German Renaissance style, is New York City’s oldest surviving luxury apartment building — and was the very first of its kind as the elite made the transition from residing in mansions to apartments.

However, it gained international recognition — and notoriety — when John Lennon, a former resident and Beatles member, was shot outside its entrance in 1980. This event turned the Dakota into a memorial site for Lennon’s fans and led to increased security measures for residents.

(His widow, Yoko Ono, still owns a residence inside.)

Not far from the Dakota, Hardenbergh also designed the Plaza, an 18-story French Renaissance-inspired building, which also fronts Central Park. Originally featuring over 800 rooms, it now operates with a mix of hotel suites and residential condominiums after renovations in 2008.

The hotel has been owned by several prominent figures, including Conrad Hilton, Donald Trump and Katara Hospitality.

He had massive buildings behind his name, but Hardenbergh also lent his touch to smaller structures, like this — though very few of them. This residence features seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms and an elevator — a luxury in historic townhouses.

This also marks the first time in more than three decades that the home has been available for purchase.

The home last sold in 1993 for $2.2 million, and was previously on the rental market for $34,000 per month.

Sitting on a coveted block near Central Park, the townhouse is surrounded by cultural landmarks like Strawberry Fields — a memorial for the late Lennon — and the American Museum of Natural History.

The home boasts an ivy-covered rear garden, a triple-height rear extension and intricate stained-glass windows.

Step through the grand wood door and you’re greeted by a spacious foyer that sets the stage for the home’s soaring ceilings, original pocket doors, intricate woodwork and vintage lighting fixtures.

The parlor floor boasts a full-width living room bathed in natural light, while the dining area is framed by original wood paneling. A dramatic, spiral rear staircase leads to the kitchen, which opens to a picturesque garden.

On the third floor, the private primary suite offers a dressing room, a spa-like bathroom and an interior balcony overlooking the garden.

The fourth and fifth floors house five additional bedrooms, three with ensuite baths, along with a bonus space for a home office, a playroom or a lounge.

Meanwhile, the garden level features a large eat-in kitchen, a family room or in-law suite, and private access to the backyard. Below that, the cellar level offers even more space for storage, a gym, or a wine cellar.

Dexter Guerrieri, Nicole Kats and Emily Barham of Vandenberg — The Townhouse Experts hold the listing.

“The owners happily raised their family in the house, and it was time for the next chapter,” Kats told The Post. She added, “The house is very spacious … We often work with townhouse owners at this juncture where they just don’t need 7,000 square feet anymore.”
