It’s a plus Hal Steinbrenner is letting the Rays use a beautifully renovated George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa this season while The Trop is being fixed.
Good for Hal. But folks who used to work down in Tampa for his dad, George Steinbrenner, aren’t convinced George would have approved this arrangement at his eponymous field.
“The Boss must be rolling over in his grave,” one ex-Yankees minor league coach remarked. “He hated the Rays with a passion — he used to yell at the coaches when we lost to them in spring training [and] used to go to Port Charlotte just to root against the Rays’ minor league team. I mean there is zero — and I mean zero — chance this would happen if the Boss was alive.”

While Hal didn’t dispute The Boss had differences with the Rays, he disagreed that his father wouldn’t bail them out under these hurricane-related circumstances.
