A woman claims her Oura ring detected her cancer symptoms before she was diagnosed with lymphoma.
Nikki Gooding, a Virginia-based family aesthetics nurse practitioner, shared that concerning data generated from her Oura ring encouraged her to seek medical treatment.
The smart ring, which resembles a wedding band, tracks various health metrics, calculating people’s movement, temperature, sleep quality, and heart rate throughout the day.
“I religiously wear my Oura ring,” she said in a TikTok video.
“I came home from a trip, started having night sweats, was super fatigued. I knew something was wrong, but I couldn’t figure out exactly what it was, so I kind of ignored it. But every day, my Oura ring app would look like this.”
Pointing to a screenshot of her Oura ring diagnostics, Gooding showed that her Symptom Radar revealed flashed up a red warning of “major signs,” telling her that her biometrics showed serious indicators that something was straining her body and encouraging her to take additional care and rest.
Further, her “readiness score,” which reflects recovery and activity levels to “show how prepared you are to take on the day,” stayed in the unusually low range of 30-40.
Gooding explained that the Oura ring also tracks the body’s baseline body temperature — and hers was shown to be off.
“It uses that information to help track your cycles. But it’s nice because it can also give you a heads up when you’re getting sick,” she said.
In the weeks before her diagnosis, the Oura ring tracked her unusually high body temperatures.
“When I started having the night sweats and fevers and everything, my temp was spiking as high as 2.7 above my baseline,” she revealed.
Night sweats and fatigue are common symptoms of carcinoid tumors, leukemia, and lymphoma.
Gooding, who was later diagnosed with lymphoma and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment, credits the Oura ring with alerting to the grave changes happening in her body.
“If I didn’t have the Oura ring, I’m sure I would have figured it out eventually. But having this information, laid out in front of me definitely made me take it more seriously,” she said.
As a nurse herself, she was hesitant to seek medical care, but the daily evidence of her decline, delivered via the Oura ring, was enough to convince her.
