The Orioles will be without yet another player come Opening Day with Grayson Rodriguez expected to miss the start of the season.
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde announced Friday that Rodriguez, 25, will begin the season on the injured list due to elbow/triceps soreness, per the Baltimore Sun.
Hyde also revealed that Rodriguez will be getting second opinions on the arm injury.
A timeline to return is not clear.
The righty dealt with triceps soreness on Thursday, a day after his start against the Twins, which saw Rodriguez pitch just 1 1/3 innings.
“Having some discomfort in the back of his elbow, so we are still getting multiple opinions. It’s not a ligament issue, so we’re not concerned about that. But it’s going to result in some missed time,” Hyde told MLB.com Friday. “We’re getting the results, we’re talking to multiple people about what the treatment, etc. is as of right now. The timeline, we’re not sure on it. But it’s not the ligament.”
Rodriguez suffered numerous injuries during the 2024 season, causing him to miss time in May before a season-ending injury in August.
Rodriguez showed promise when he was on the mound last season, pitching to a 13-4 record with a 3.86 ERA in 20 starts.
With Baltimore losing Corbin Burnes and John Means in free agency, Rodriguez has been expected to lead the pitching staff this season.
Rodriguez’s injury is the latest addition to a number of Orioles players currently on the IL ahead of Opening Day.
Orioles star shortstop Gunnar Henderson could potentially miss the start of the season as he was diagnosed with a right intercostal strain.
Reliever Andrew Kittredge is expected to miss multiple months for arthroscopic knee surgery, per The Baltimore Banner.
Baltimore will also be without starting pitchers Trevor Rogers and Kyle Bradish at the start of the season.
Rogers (right knee) is projected to return at the start of May, and Bradish will likely be out until the All-Star break as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
