Iman Shumpert and Teyana Taylor’s messy divorce is playing out in the public eye — and getting uglier by the second.
The former NBA champ and the “Gonna Love Me” singer, who finalized their divorce in July 2024, have been the subject of recent reports about their settlement and the splitting of their assets.
In a court filing on Tuesday, Taylor accused Shumpert of leaking false information to the media about their divorce in order to fuel his rap music, according to E! News.
The former Knicks guard, who last played for the Nets in 2021, denied Taylor’s accusations in a statement, which was issued Wednesday by his lawyer to TMZ Sports.
In her filing, Taylor asked the court to issue the maximum fine of $1,000 and to hold Shumpert in contempt for 20 days, as she noted that the alleged leak of information came after she posted photos of herself with her boyfriend, actor Aaron Pierre, at Vanity Fair’s 2025 Oscars after-party.
Taylor, 34, states in the court papers that the ex-couple never reached a settlement when they finalized their divorce in July 2024, after which the case was sealed — and that everything they received was appointed by the court.
“The parties never entered into any ‘Settlement’ at all and everything that either party received in the divorce (finalized on July 1, 2024) was awarded by the Court,” her petition states.
“On March 3, 2025, Oscar night, [Taylor] posted black and white photos of herself and another actor. Not surprisingly, just days later, a huge story about a false ‘Divorce Settlement’ between the parties pops up, just in time to help promote [Shumpert]’s newly-released new rap song.
Taylor, 34, discussed the situation at length in an Instagram livestream this week and said she has proof Shumpert, also 34, allegedly paid blogs to post about their divorce, among other things, to further his newly released music.
Taylor added in the livestream that she filed the motion because she doesn’t feel safe and is receiving death threats amid the spread of false information about their divorce case, which she said she informed Shumpert about and he allegedly did nothing.
The ex-couple, who tied the knot in 2016, have share daughters Iman “Junie” Tayla Shumpert Jr., 9, and Rue Rose Shumpert, 4.
Divorce settlement drama
In her March 18 filing, Taylor said when the divorce settlement rumors surfaced, she had her attorney contact Shumpert’s legal counsel to ask him “to stop or curtail the public dissemination of information.”
Taylor said Shumpert’s response was that he “would pretend that he had no idea how the stories about the divorce case leaked.”
Taylor stated in the petition that the court awarded her four out of her and Shumpert’s seven properties, including two she said were purchased solely by her.
She added that Shumpert received the Miami condo that he had originally gifted to her.
“Both parties put work, time and money into the remaining four properties that were divided by the Court,” the petition stated.
Shumpert’s response
“My client, Mr. Iman Shumpert, has never whatsoever leaked any allegations or claims stated in any of the pleadings in” the Taylor-Shumpert divorce case, Steele said. “Mr. Shumpert adamantly denies that he has provided any information to any media.”
“Specifically, but without limitations, he denies that he leaked any information which may have served as the basis for the multiple news reports preceding the trial of this matter.
“As agreed by the parties, and as ordered by the court, he has not, and he will not disclose any of the contents of the now-sealed file,” Steele said, “nor will he reveal or discuss the substance or content of any orders or pleadings.”
Steele added that Shumpert vows to “continue to comply with the court order sealing the details of this divorce.
“He has absolutely no interest in discussing any of these private and personal details with any media or any parties not directly involved with this case.”
Social media anxiety
Taylor explained in the Instagram livestream that she has “social media anxiety,” adding that she always preferred to keep their relationship private.
“I have the proof that you’re paying people to post this stuff,” Taylor said in part. “… I’m never addressing this again… If anything else comes out around the time that I have [projects] coming out, you know exactly what’s going on.
“I would like to live my life in peace… I really would and I would like him to live his life in peace. I hope that everbody can just move on and be happy. These fake rumors… none of this stuff is from this year… Not only is it not true, but it’s old. It surfacing magically during the time I have accolades was just weird to me.”
When did Iman Shumpert and Teyana Taylor split?
Taylor filed for divorce after six years of marriage in January 2023, and she announced their separation that September.
In a statement posted to her Instagram at the time, Taylor said shut down infidelity rumors and said she she and Shumpert were “best friends” and were focused on co-parenting their two children.
“Iman and I are separated and have been for a while,” she wrote on Instagram. “To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ ain’t one of the reasons for our departure. We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children.”
