In a city where a private outdoor hangout can feel as rare as a rent-controlled apartment, one Manhattan couple built a sky-high oasis — and now, they’re ready for a new owner to make a splash.
A penthouse in the Flatiron District with a rare private rooftop pool, and even a hot tub, has returned to market asking $35 million, The Post has learned.
The triplex residence, perched atop 55 W. 17th St., belongs to hedge-fund manager Teddy Kang and his wife, Elise Kang, who purchased and customized the space before the building was completed.
The Kangs bought the unit for $16.76 million in 2017 and worked closely with developer Toll Brothers City Living to combine two and a half floors into a sprawling six-bedroom, 5.5 bathroom penthouse, while retaining part of the third floor as a separate rental.
That portion is not included in the sale.
Among the custom features: a rare rooftop pool extended to more than 20 feet in length.
The al-fresco space also boasts an outdoor kitchen and room for dining. A pergola shelters the outdoor dining area.
“I’ve always thought that the city is a very hectic place,” Kang told the Wall Street Journal in 2022, when the property first hit the market. “There’s a lack of outdoor space where you can just go home, relax and soak in the sun or do outdoor activities.”
The Kangs had explored options on the Upper East Side but struggled to find a developer open to creating the kind of outdoor living space they envisioned.
Flatiron, by contrast, offered the flexibility they needed to bring their vision to life. The building presented a “unique opportunity,” Kang said.
Access across the three levels is via a dramatic spiral staircase finished in Venetian plaster and modeled after one at the Edition Hotel near Madison Square Park.
A custom brass-chain chandelier cascades through the center of the stairwell, adding to the unit’s bespoke detailing.
The home, occupying over 6,650 square feet, includes expansive living and dining areas, a kitchen outfitted with hand-blown-glass cabinetry and an office wrapped in walnut with a marble-backed bar, according to one of the listing’s representatives, Leonard Steinberg of Compass.
“Private amenities like your own swimming pool are the jewel in the crown,” Steinberg told The Post.
The primary bedroom suite, situated on the top floor, features a Grigio Collemandina marble fireplace, “massive closets”, and an ensuite bathroom adorned with marble and walnut, the listing states.
There is also guest suite wing with its own separate entrance, according to the listing.
Construction wrapped in early 2020, just before the onset of the pandemic.
The Kangs moved in that February; shortly after, lockdowns swept across the city.
It was “perfect timing,” Kang previously told the Journal, noting that their two young children had room to play indoors and outdoors while much of the city wasn’t open.
Now, with their eldest child attending school on the Upper East Side, the family relocated uptown.
Kang, who serves as chief investment officer of Kylin Management, a fund focused primarily on Asian markets, said the decision to sell was driven by a desire to be closer to school.
The listing has made multiple appearances on the market since 2022, originally asking $36 million.
Steinberg is listing the home with Compass brokers Herve Senequier, Amy Mendizabal, Calli Sarkesh and Niklas Hackstein.
